The Landing Art Gallery
Located in the Landing Mall just East of the Coho Ferry Dock, on the waterfront in
Historic Port Angeles, Washington.
I chose the “Landing Art Gallery” in Port Angeles Washington for my critique, I have only been there once before about a year ago and I noticed a wide variety of works. I originally chose the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) but could not make it due to a time crunch. This museum supports Western Washington artists and has everything from oil and acrylic paintings to homemade jewelry and sculptures. It is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in the summer and is located in the Landing Mall on the waterfront in Port Angeles. To be featured in the gallery you have to fill out the necessary forms and get approved by the owner Sharon. The fee per month to show your work is $40. The gallery takes 30% percent of anything sold. Each artist is also expected to volunteer at least one day per month to run the gallery.
To be completely honest most of the work in the gallery was not up my alley way, there were many brilliant artists with exceptional work it just so
happens that my eye steers more towards the dark street side of things. One artist that caught my eye was Gary Rainwater, his oil paintings were vibrant and vivid. I am a big fan of nature and I feel that Gary captures the rawness of nature with his paintings. His work is very similar to some of the other artists
featured but his seemed more original to me for some reason. I really enjoyed the glass works by Nila Ann Foraker, if anybody was
close to getting me to buy something it would be her. There was one with koi fish that was amazing.
Another artist that caught my eye was Hideko Kano Goecher, her Sumi paintings were amazing. I really like fonts and symbols and her complex Japanese writing looks very good. Most of her work is on white paper giving great contrast to the dark ink used in her pieces. The only thing that I did not like about her work was that they all kind of had the same look and feel. All
together I really liked this gallery it featured a variety of mediums and a lot of different artists. Being from the city and being mostly inspired by street
art, I am finally starting to appreciate the country side of the artistic world. However I do strongly feel that this gallery could inject a little more edgy and
grittier art.
A couple of other artists I would like to mention would be Jeff Tocher, his work are beautiful and clever his work to me is like a funny Van Gogh. Sherry Shipley, her water colors were bright and vivid. Most time I see water color it is just too dull for me. Finally Don Nisbell, his work has a very cartoonish feel to it. I love museums and this was the biggest one I could find in the area, although most the work was not to my taste all of the work was well done and well represented.
